Oh man! I'm so glad they open one near by in SG. Love love love their bbq suckling pig and other bbq items. The skin is like Lechon but the Chinese crunchier version. I use to get it at the Garvey location, but this is very convenient now. My family has been going to Monterey palace for years and it does not disappoint. Definitely would recommend additional family and friends. Yummo!!!!!
Chinese restaurants that sell roast suckling pig are generally easier to find and provide a higher quality meat than the equivalent lechon sold at Filipino restaurants in LA. Hop Woo in Chinatown is great. For my taste, Sam Woo is the classic choice, with a good location in Alhambra (though it looks like a total hole in the wall). But there's one other well-kept secret that people have to check out, and that's Monterey Palace. They do banquet style dining and dim sum on one side, and a premium quality BBQ deli on the other side. It's among the last of a dying breed of epic Chinese restaurants that have been ravaged by shifting consumer tastes and low Yelp reviews. But their fried crispy skin pork shank is among the best I've ever had, on top of their fabulous duck and char siu (red pork). Makes me so sad how much people hate this place on Yelp, lol. "It seems dirty and the staff seems unfriendly..." This restaurant is exactly normal for an 80's/90's authentic Chinese restaurant. The cooking techniques are traditional, and the attitude of the staff is best described as "down to business." Ask any San Gabriel Valley native what the health department food grades stand for, it's "C for Chinese, B for Better Chinese, and A for Americanized." Unfortunately, places like this might all be gone in a few years, gone the way of gigantic golden dragon decor, private rooms with spinning lazy susan tables, buffets with unbelievable greasy delicious noodles, and incredible but cheap dim sum. I, for one, will do my best to keep places like this alive as long as possible.

Got my Sunday fix of bbq and dim sum all in one place. Yumminess! Their roast duck and bbq pork is to die for! I got a little bit of everything from bbq pork, soy sauce chicken, half a duck, pork shiu mai, and sticky rice. You can't go wrong with their food.
